Why Buy a New Golf Cart Instead of a Used Golf Cart?

When choosing between a new or used golf cart, consider the long-term benefits. Many customers value the peace of mind that comes with a new golf cart backed by a strong manufacturer warranty. Well-maintained ICON EV models also tend to hold their value, which can be an advantage when trading in for the latest model through your local authorized ICON dealer.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Electric vs. Gas Golf Carts?

Electric Golf Carts

Electric golf carts provide a quiet, smooth ride and require minimal maintenance. Over the years, they’ve evolved beyond golf course use to become one of the most popular forms of local transportation—perfect for neighborhood rides, school drop-offs, or evening trips to dinner. With the average family driving just a few miles on each trip, electric can be a clean and quiet way to go.

All ICON EV and EPIC electric golf carts include a 3-year manufacturer warranty, offering exceptional peace of mind. Additionally, all ICON EV and EPIC Carts feature industry-leading Eco Battery lithium batteries, backed by an 8- to 10-year manufacturer warranty (3–5 years full, plus an additional 5 years prorated depending on the model).

Gas Golf Carts
Gas golf cart models deliver greater torque, power, and range—ideal for challenging terrain or extended rides. ICON Gas Golf Carts are the only gas-powered Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) on the market today and provide a reliable alternative for those who prefer not to rely on battery charging. They include a 2-year manufacturer warranty and a 1-year 12V battery warranty.

What Are the Differences Between Golf Carts and LSVs?

The key differences between a golf cart and a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) are speed capability, safety requirements, and how they are regulated by law.

Always check your local regulations. While many regulations are managed at the state level, counties and cities are often allowed to change laws to cater to the environment they are trying to create. These local laws are sometimes more stringent than state or federal laws.

Golf Cart

  • Top Speed: Under 19 MPH
  • Usage: Private property, golf courses, gated communities, parks, or campgrounds
  • Safety Equipment: Not required (e.g., four-wheel disc brakes, seat belts, headlights, turn signals, mirrors, etc.)
  • Street Legality: Not street legal (except where local ordinances allow limited use)
  • Registration: Usually not required; not regulated by the NHTSA

Low Speed Vehicle (LSV)

  • Top Speed: Low-Speed Vehicles (Top Speed 20–25 mph; Fully FMVSS 500-Compliant)
  • Usage: Short trips on public roads with posted speed limits of 35 MPH or less (and crossing up to 45 MPH at intersections)
  • Safety Equipment (required): Four-wheel disc brakes, headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, mirrors, horn, DOT windshield, and DOT-approved tires are a few examples (check state and local regulations)
  • Street Legality: Legal in most states with proper documentation
  • Registration: Must have a 17-digit VIN, title, registration, and insurance (varies by state law); regulated by the NHTSA

Are There Requirements for Operating Street-Legal Golf Carts on Public Roads?

Yes, but they vary by state. Always review your local Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or DMV regulations.

Most states require:

  • Safety equipment (four-wheel disc brakes, headlights, brake lights, mirrors, turn signals, seat belts, parking brake, DOT windshield, and reflectors)
  • Title, registration, and insurance with minimum Property Damage Liability (PDL) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage
  • A valid learner’s permit or driver’s license for drivers under 18
  • A government-issued photo ID for all operators on public roadways

Additional restrictions may apply for speed, location, and passenger limits. Always confirm your city and state’s specific LSV requirements before driving on public roads.

Do I Need to Register My Street-Legal Golf Cart in My State?

Most likely. Requirements differ by state and municipality, but most areas require:

  • Safety equipment installation
  • A title and registration certificate
  • A government-issued license plate

Check with your local Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or equivalent agency for details. Your authorized ICON dealer can assist with registration paperwork and ensure your vehicle meets local standards.

Do I Need Car Insurance for My Street-Legal Golf Cart?

Yes, in most states. Street-legal golf carts are considered motor vehicles and must meet the same insurance standards as other road vehicles.

Check with your state DHSMV and your insurance provider for required coverage. Many states mandate PDL and PIP minimums. For business or commercial use, a commercial policy may be necessary.

Even in areas where coverage isn’t required by law, ICON strongly recommends maintaining insurance for protection against accidents, theft, or weather-related damage.

How Do I Choose the Right Golf Cart?

The ICON Family of Brands offers a wide range of golf carts and low-speed vehicles to suit every lifestyle and budget. To find the right fit, consider your intended use, budget, seating needs, and whether you require a street-legal LSV. The following FAQs will help narrow your options:

Do not interrupt the charge cycle until the charge indicator turns green. The Eco Battery charger includes an automatic shut-off once a full charge is reached, so it’s safe to leave plugged in.

Do I Have to Use an Eco Battery Charger?

Yes. The Eco Battery and Eco Battery charger are designed to work together. Using third-party chargers or battery tenders may damage the battery and/or golf cart and will void your warranty.

How Long Does It Take to Charge My Eco Battery on My ICON EV?

The short answer for most is 6-8 hours. Charging time depends on battery capacity and charger rate. If you’re an engineer and like math, then follow this formula:

Total Combined Battery Ah ÷ Charger Amps = Charge Time (hours)

(This formula will give you the approximate charge time from a fully discharged state.)

Example:
A 105Ah battery with a 15A charger takes approximately 7 hours to charge from fully depleted.
At 50% charge, expect about 3.5 hours.

Will My Eco Battery Overcharge?

No. Both the Eco Battery and Eco Battery charger include built-in monitoring systems that prevent overcharging. This is one reason only the Eco Battery charger should be used.

Do Eco Battery Lithium Batteries Self-Discharge When Not in Use?

Yes, but at a very low rate compared to other battery types. Self-discharge occurs naturally when not in use, but lithium technology minimizes the effect.
*Note: The battery will go into hibernation after 7 days of non-usage to preserve the charge level longer.

Can I Extend the Life of My Eco Battery?

Yes. Follow these care guidelines:

  • Charge daily to keep the battery fully charged and ready to use.
  • Do not charge if the internal battery temperature is below 34°F.
  • Clean the battery only with a damp cloth— that does not include chemical agents
  • Do not pressure wash

  • Freeze charge protection

Will My Lithium Eco Battery Function in Cold Temperatures?

Yes, but runtime may decrease in extreme cold. Eco Battery lithium batteries discharge down to approximately –20°F, but will not charge below 32°F.

Because of this, carts with regenerative charging systems may experience issues below freezing, as the battery cannot accept charge from either the charger or the cart’s Regen charging system at that temperature.

If your battery is experiencing issues after cold exposure, contact your local ICON dealer for assistance.

What Is a Regen (Regenerative) Charging System?

A regenerative charging system captures energy during braking and converts it back into electricity, extending range and battery life while reducing brake wear. All ICON EV models feature a regenerative charging system.

Can I Use My Eco Battery in Extremely Hot Temperatures?

Yes. ICON EV golf carts with Eco Battery lithium batteries have been tested and proven to perform in ambient temperatures exceeding 115°F.

Do I Need to “Break In” My AGM or Lead-Acid Batteries?

Yes. New AGM or Lead-Acid batteries are initially about 75% of their full strength. The first 10–20 complete charge/discharge cycles are critical for reaching full capacity. The following procedure will ensure they reach their full potential.

Break-In Procedure Prior to First Use and Thereafter:

  1. Fully charge the batteries before first use (Plug in vehicle and leave until the charger shuts off by itself.).
  2. Drive until the batteries reach about 75% discharge (approximately 9 holes of golf as a reference).
  3. Plug the vehicle back in and repeat the charge cycle. Remember to allow the charger to finish on its own.
  4. Repeat for the first 10–20 cycles.
  5. By the 12th cycle, you should notice improved power, speed, and run time.

Important:

  • NEVER discharge batteries below 50% capacity.
  • NEVER leave batteries discharged for extended periods of time.
  • If the vehicle is idle or in storage, RECHARGE every 2 weeks.
  • When in doubt, recharge.

Can I Extend the Life of My AGM or Lead-Acid Batteries?

Yes. Proper care and charging habits can greatly increase battery lifespan.

Tips for Longer Battery Life:

  • Recharge after each use to prevent sulfation.
  • Check electrolyte levels frequently, especially in warm climates.
  • Add distilled water only when the battery is fully charged (never overfill).
  • Keep plates covered at all times.
  • Avoid high ambient temperatures (over 80°F) to prevent grid corrosion and reduced lifespan.
  • Avoid deep discharges—shallower discharge cycles last longer (See example below).

Example:
A 50% depth of discharge (DoD) battery lasts twice as long as an 80% DoD battery. A 20% DoD battery lasts up to five times longer than a 50% DoD battery. Typical golf cart batteries average 225 cycles at 80% DoD, and up to 750 cycles at 50% DoD.

Do AGM or Lead-Acid Batteries Self-Discharge When Not in Use?

Yes. All batteries self-discharge over time. The rate depends on battery type, age, and storage temperature.
As a guideline, AGM and flooded lead-acid batteries self-discharge about 4% per week at 80°F.

Can AGM or Lead-Acid Batteries Freeze?

Yes. Batteries can freeze if left partially or fully discharged. As the state of charge decreases, the electrolyte becomes more like water and freezes more easily. For example, a fully charged battery freezes at approximately –92°F. A battery at a 40% state of charge can freeze at around 16°F.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Premature Lead-Acid Battery Failure?

  • Poor user maintenance and charging habits
  • Loss of electrolyte due to heat or overcharging
  • Lead sulfation from long storage periods
  • Undercharging
  • Excessive vibration
  • Freezing or overheating
  • Positive grid corrosion due to high temperatures
  • Using tap water (causes calcium sulfation). Always use distilled water only.

When Should I Add Water to My Batteries?

**Never add water to Eco Lithium or AGM batteries.**
For serviceable lead-acid batteries only:

  • Add distilled water after charging, as distilled water is lost during the charging process.
  • If electrolyte levels are extremely low or plates are exposed, add distilled water to cover plates before charging.

**Use distilled water only—never tap water.

How Much Water Should I Add to Lead-Acid Batteries?

Use distilled water only to refill. Maintain electrolyte levels ⅛”–¼” below the bottom of the fill tubes that extend from each battery opening.

What Should I Do If I Overfill My Lead-Acid Batteries?

If you overfill but there is no overflow, stop filling and leave as is.

If overflow occurs:

  1. Remember that the fluid is acidic—avoid contact with skin or clothing.
  2. Wear protective gloves during cleanup.
  3. Carefully wipe the top of the battery with a rag or paper towel, moving away from battery ports.
  4. Do not allow drips to fall onto other components.
  5. Dispose of cleaning materials properly.
